There are optional rack rails available, though they are not included in the box.Despite being a monoblock amplifier, there are two pairs of binding posts on the rear of the XPA-1. This allows you to bi-wire speakers with two individual runs of cables if you desire.I felt that the binding posts are too far apart. Over a foot separates the positive and negative terminals, and most speaker cables will likely not reach them by default. I added a banana extension for my cables to enable them to make it, but you might need to split your speaker cable at the end so that the two legs can reach each set of binding posts. The biggest internal change to the XPA-1 Gen 2 is the addition of the Class A switch. When you enable this, the first 60 watts from the amplifier are Class A. If you need more power, you can switch it to Class A/B operation. If you have the switch in the Class A/B mode, it operates there all the time. Since both modes have access to all 600 watts, why wouldn’t you leave it in Class A all the time?The answer is simple: heat. Class A means that the amplifier is always drawing power and Class A amps are only 25% efficient by nature. With 60 watts of Class A power, that means 180 watts of power are dissipated as heat when the amp is idle. Leaving the XPA-1in Class A mode at idle for an hour bears this out, as the amps will become quite warm.

The Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 3 amplifier was used primarily to voice and demonstrate the hybrid speaker during the development phase of that book chapter. I’m guessing the Emotiva power amp has less than 5-10 hours of time total, so very low time on this excellent amplifier. Incidentally, the Emotiva XPA-2 is visible in a couple photographs in the book, so I’d be happen to include a copy of LDC8 with the Emotiva power amp (signed if you desire). I purchased this power amplifier directly from Emotiva probably back in 2009 and it has worked flawlessly up until the other week. When the power button is depressed the unit goes through a fault test before power is actually supplied to the electronics. Now after about 9 sec (once the the power on button is depressed), all red LEDs flash and the unit is prevented from being powered on. Troubleshooting suggestions indicate a short circuit. I checked with Emotiva in Franklin TN and I was referred to Pyramid Audio in Austin TX for repair and service. Using Pyramid I am estimating the repair cost in total to run between $600 and $800. I decided this is a bit much to spend so I went out and purchased another Emotiva power amp and all is good as I could still use my existing Emotiva preamp. This unit may appeal to one with experience repairing amplifiers as a recent Ebay listing for a working and repaired XPA-2 Gen 1 listed at just under $800. Please note the weight being around 75 lbs and with packaging maybe a max of 85 lbs, so this unit is a bit expensive to ship. If you are near the Chicago IL area you can pick it up and save shipping.
