She was allowed to take home many of the speakers that never made it into production. This is one of those. It is unfinished and rough. Very rough. The cheesy 90’s oak veneer is peeling in a few places. It does have an original hand wound Dunlavy crossover , terminal plate and the impossible to find Dunlavy labeled wire between each speaker. This is really just a conversation piece for the audiophile. It is sold as non working junk. I have no way to verify the story of where it came from.

Up for sale is a used pair of Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-II floorstanding speakers in good aesthetic and excellent functional condition. Every pair of DAL speakers spent up to two days in an anachoic chamber where wave engineer-turned-speaker designer, John Dunlavy, custom built crossovers individually for EACH set. Scan-Speak drivers were matched to an astronomical ±0.25 dB sensitivity, while white oak cabinets were built in-house to exacting specifications with unique baffle designs. The result is a phase coherent and time aligned work of art with stunning soundstage and separation—each instrument layered over the next, each vocal flowing from an impossible plane—for a sound capable only from the work of a brilliant engineer. How brilliant? Mr. Dunlavy designed and built communications and telemetry antenna systems for NASA’s Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, and served on the UN Security Council as a top expert on wave physics. These speakers can be described as fast, accurate, and musical. And, at 65”, tall! It is also one of a very few loudspeakers capable of reproducing a square wave. They lack larger drivers required for full bass extension and require a subwoofer for full spectrum reproduction. Also, it has been suggested that decoupling them from the floor improves response @ 100Hz. Physical condition is good. The grill fabric appears to be original and could be replaced easily over their strong metal frames; however, their flaws never bothered me. The white oak veneer has some minor damage on the back near a corner than isn’t visible directly from a three-quarter angle. These are by far the best speakers I’ve ever experienced and am pained to part with them. Unfortunately, I no longer devote much time to critical listening, and am instead moving to a less cluttered in-wall speaker environment.
