This is a rare opportunity to own a legendary made in Japan preamp from the 90s basically restored to new again. I am the 2nd owner and restored it about 8 months ago, it’s been my main preamp. Even rarer is the remote which is in amazing condition and comes with the original user manual. Unit was completely disassembled, cleaned, disinfected. All 100+ electrolytic capacitors were replaced with audio grade Nichicon caps, mostly fine golds. All 4 potentiometers were disassembled, properly cleaned, and lubed with FL100. All transistors and diodes were tested with no service needed. It works flawlessly. Every input/output both digital and analog work perfect. Phono preamp and internal DAC works perfect and both sound wonderful. The balanced XLR and RCA outputs work simultaneously. There is not one problem what so ever with it and it really does live up to the hype. The restoration process on these units is extensive with 5 boards to recap and practically the entire unit be taken apart, but it was totally worth it and now I see why most techs won’t touch these unless your willing to pay a small fortune. Don’t let this one pass, I truly enjoy it but I’m on to bigger and better things(tubes). Some might argue that Denon was at its peak in the 1980s. Its hard to think of another old school audio brand that leaned into the digital foray more aggressively than Denon while maintaining their analog chops. The DAP-5500 is the perfect example of the companys position at the leading-edge of the digital music market. This preamp/controller is quite literally, a two-in-one. On the right side of the chassis is a complete analog preamp with two unbalanced line outs, one balanced, two tape loops, and both balanced and unbalanced pre-outs as well as a dedicated DAC output. This allows the preamp to be used as a stand-alone DAC if the preamp functions are not needed.On the digital side to the left, the unit features two coax inputs, a single optical TOSKLINK input, and a very unique digital record loop using a coax in/out for recording on digital tape, mini-Disc, or CDR. Technically, the DAC utilizes four ganged Burr Brown PCM56KP 16-bit DACs with 4x oversampling to extract and translate those 0s and 1s into a crystal clear audio signal.
