Description
DENON DP-790 Turntable With DENON 790 Tonearm With 120V/100V Step-Down Transformer Included. This is a Restored and Serviced JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) DENON DP-790 Turntable manufactured in Japan by DENON. Based on DENONs RIAA Radio Broadcast Technology this is a High-Performance Manual Turntable with an exceptionally robust build quality. It is a Component Machine consisting of separate Turntable and Tonearm. The two components are separate and do not share any internal components beyond being attached to the same Plinth. They are separate matched components, each grounded separately and designed to work in unison with one another. The Plinth: The Plinth is heavy, reinforced, and constructed of Japanese SEN-grain (Japanese Birch) which possesses strong acoustic and performance characteristics. The Turntable: This DP-790 Turntable is a Servo-Controlled Direct Drive Turntable with a diecast aluminum Platter weighing 2.205 lbs. It has exceptional performance characteristics. It operates at speeds of 33.33 RPM and 45 RPM and maintains incredible speed management through use of DENONs proprietary Magnetic Speed Detection System. This system uses a smooth running two-phase AC motor with the servo circuit controlled by the frequency generated from the pulses recorded on a magnetic strip coated on the rim on the underside of the turntable platter. The information is passed through a comparator circuit fed with a reference voltage and a Magnetic Head reading the information controls directional speed. It is an effective system resulting in flawless Speed Management, consistent predictable performance, and contributes to the tables sonic characteristics. This speed management system was used on all of DENONs higher-end turntables. The precise nature of the Turntable design, Speed Management, Direct Drive Motor, Bearing Assembly, etc., results in a unit with incredibly quick and powerful startup, as well as a quiet unit with Wow and Flutter virtually non-existant at 0.018% WRMS. The Tonearm: This DP-790 employs an S-Shaped, needle pressure direct reading, 244mm Effective Length, Static-Balance Tonearm which achieves high sensitivity and tracking performance along with the Anti-Skate mechanism. DENON spent considerable time and money developing a specialized elastic material (viscoelastic) which is used between the SEN-grain cabinet and the tonearm. As a result, any vibration from the cabinet is eliminated thus not impacting the Tonearm and preventing howling. This same viscoelastic material is used on the plinth corners as Dustcover bump stops to control vibrations when the Dustcover is closed. The Headshell and Cartridge: This DP-790 comes with a DENON PCL-3 Headshell equipped with a DENON DL-103S MC (Moving Coil) Cartridge and Stylus. It is necessary to have an amplifier or a separate Pre-amplifier or Phono Stage which accepts MC Cartridges. A Step-Up Transformer, or SUT, may also be used and plugged into the MM (Moving Magnet)/Traditional Phono Connection. The Transformer: Included in this bundle is a BRAND NEW POWERBRIGHT VC-100J Step-Down Transformer specifically designed for Japanese electronics. While America uses 120V voltage, Japan uses the lower 100V voltage for consumer electronics which necessitates the need for a Step-Down Transformer to convert the voltage. This is required so as to not damage the electronics of the Turntable. Again, this is included. Following is the work which was performed: The Turntable exterior was cleaned thoroughly and the SEN finish was treated three times with Howard Feed and Wax to clean and revitalize the Plinth. It should be noted there is a small physical imperfection on the front right fascia near the corner (See Pic.# 23). This does not affect performance in any way. The Dustcover was reconditioned to remove scratches and now looks OUTSTANDING. The Dustcover Hinges were Ultrasonically cleaned. The Turntable housing and assembly was cleaned and internal electronics were cleaned with Electrical Contact Cleaner and inspected for electronics degradation. All internal electronics were deemed to be in acceptable condition. Turntable Power Cord, RCA Connector Cables and Ground wire were inspected, cleaned, and determined to be acceptable. The DP-790 Tonearm and Tonearm Assembly was completely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled. No issues regarding construction or usability were found. After cleaning and reconditioning, the Tonearm demonstrates increased fluidity and improved performance. The overall result of the work performed is Clean Machine that maintains predictable and accurate speed, exhibits outstanding sonic imaging, soundstage, and overall tonal quality. DENON Turntables from the 1970s and 1980s are fantastic machines and, in my opinion, some of the best from that era. In terms of Satisfaction...They are worth every penny spent. Transformer will ship separately from the turntable, in its own box, and is included in the total cost of shipping. This is a used, vintage turntable. Expect some imperfections.
