Its a belt-driven system, as is generally preferred for non-DJ use since it isolates the platter from motor vibration (and thus improves sound quality) driven by a 16-pole synchronous motor, with settings for 33.3 and 45rpm and what was, back when it was made in 1981 or 1982, and exceptionally wide-ranging pitch control of +/- 6%. Dual put a lot of thought into tracking, opting for a four-axis gimbal apparently of the same type used in aircraft navigation systems; this provides mass-free vertical tracking and much reduced friction which, combined with the properties of the straight XM 300 alloy ULM tone arm and Dual TK49S cartridge, results in exceptional tracking thats easily comparable to modern machines - theyll handle even badly warped records with no problems at all and, according to legend, will even track accurately on a slope. For a belt-driven deck of its era, start-up time is lightning fast, taking only two seconds to spin the heavy platter up to 45rpm - not really a concern for the vast majority of users, but further evidence that the 505 is a well put-together machine. The platter and top deck are, of course, insulated from vibration by being suspended on shock-absorbing springs above the plinth (this one, incidentally, has no strobe - some 50s do, some dont). This one has seen some use, but after extensive bench testing (we rigged it up to a 1977 B&O Beomaster 1100 amp, then gave Kraftwerks Autobahn a blast - thus killing three birds with one stone by testing two bits of kit and a pending Discogs upload, whilst also enjoying some excellent music) it proved to be in full working order - we dont have a wow-and-flutter meter and we dont trust those phone apps, but there was no indication that the speed ever drifted outside the 0.08% (eg inaudible to most listeners) range claimed by the manufacturer. Its currently fitted with an Ortofon DN 149S stylus, made specifically for the 505; at present, its performing well but theres a hint of crackle to suggest itll need to be replaced in the not-so-distant future - the good news in that department is that Ortofon still make them, and you can pick up a brand new replacement for under £60 if you shop around online. It does, however, have some cosmetic defects, though all of these are minor - a light scratch here and there but nothing that wont respond to polishing and, like pretty much every bit of household tech and furniture to have survived the 1980s, a few specks of magnolia emulsion - again, nothing that cant be removed. The clear cover is scuffed, but has no cracks; it attaches to the player by means of two hinged clips round the back, one of which is cracked but still serves its purpose. As with all the mains-powered electrical items we sell, its been professionally PAT tested and certified safe to plug in and use with the lead and UK-type plug already fitted. An unusual feature of the 505 is that the audio cable is connected to the circuitry inside the machine rather than having L+R sockets (its very easy to change the cable if need be, however); the cable here is in excellent order and is fitted with standard RCA plugs. About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count. Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices. Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support. It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target. © 2017 Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
