Description
For that someone who has everything, up for sale is a rare collection of all four Infinity Crescendo Series speakers from the mid 1990s, plus a hand-crafted 4-Way center speaker. That is nine (9) speakers total. Top of the line, the CS 3009 originally retailed at $2700 a pair! We purchased these to have an amazing sounding 5-channel speaker system with matching tonality that needs to be heard to be believed! Used and in typical condition for vintage speakers, these speakers have always been kept indoors in a smoke-free home. As shown in the photos, only a few scratches and nicks in the wood, a couple small tears in the grill cloths, and one speaker has a water stain on the top that needs restoration. Additionally, a woofer in the CS 3008 and CS 3006 needs refoaming. I’m happy to take more pictures or on request and arrangement you could inspect them in-person before bidding. Please ask questions. BackgroundThe Crescendo Series was Infinity’s first step towards leveraging their years of critical acclaim into financial success and moving towards big box retailers in the mid 1990’s. Those who know of Infinity in the early Arnie Nudell era know them when they were the cutting edge speaker company that pushed the envelope not only in terms of speaker cabinet design, but also in the revolutionary use of new materials and drivers. The Crescendo Series were Infinity’s new Top of the Line speaker models, and the CS 3006, 3007, 3008, and 3009 were essentially a new form factor for the fantastic Infinity Kappa 6 (6.1), 7 (7.1), 8 (8.1), and 9 (9.1) speakers. The Crescendo line had four different speakers that all featured Emit-R Tweeters and IMG Woofers. The Crescendo line started with the CS- 3006, which featured an Emit-R, a 3 IMG midrange, and an 8 IMG woofer. The CS-3007 was a floor standing speaker and featured an additional woofer and a larger cabinet then the CS- 3006. The CS-3008 featured an Emit-R tweeter, a 4 midrange, a 6.5 mid-base coupler, and a 10 woofer. The CS-3009 featured an additional 10 woofer. The Crescendo Series used the same interior components and drivers used in the Kappas, with the exception of the Polycell Midrange Dome. I have listened to many different Infinities over the years and can safely say that the Crescendos are every bit as good as the later Kappas produced in the early to mid 90s. The two 10 IMG woofers offer excellent bass and are faster than in the Kappa 9.1, and many prefer the sound of the 4 IMG cone driver over the Kappa 9.1’s Polycell Midrange Dome. The reason that these are somewhat rare and do not have a listing in the Audiogon Bluebook (the next model down – the CS 3008 is listed) is that very, very few of these were ever manufactured and sold. At the time of their release in 1993 these CS 3009 speakers were retailing for $2,700 a pair and being marketed in a big box retailer environment that was used to selling speakers for a fraction of that price. Each store had one pair of CS-3009s in the speaker room, and none in stock to sell. If a client wanted one, they would have to order it from the regional warehouse, as no store ever kept a boxed pair in their stockroom. The Crescendo Series was a critical success but a financial failure, and the series was produced for less than three years after it was introduced, and was discontinued in 1995.
