There is no useless info here, so please spend a couple minutes to read ALL of it before spending $1500. Overall this Cary tube amp is in very good condition WITH a couple issues. I purchased this recently with the intention to sell it and am by no means an expert when it comes to tube amps. I powered it on and all the tubes on the top lit up (see pics), but I could never get the 2 green cats eyes tubes to light up. From what I understand they are for aesthetics only and not nearly as expensive to replace - that assumes the issue is the tubes. As for the other tubes, I have no way of knowing how many hours they have been in use. When I first took the amp out of the box, I noticed a rattling sound from inside...which is why I took the bottom off. I figured Id take pics since I was already in there. The rattling sound came from the small piece of metal that I think is the quick release for the speaker(?) wire output on the back of the unit - I have no idea how it ended up inside the metal housing. I will send that loose piece (see pics) with the amp. I connected a receiver & some speakers to the amp and the playthrough sounded smooth - no static or anything like that. I have not done any tinkering or working on this unit other than to find & remove the rattling piece out of the housing and give it a good cleaning. I totally get that it is often way more work to undo someones fixes than to just deal with issues. So to recap (no pun intended), the 2 issues I have found are the cats eyes tubes and the quick release button....and, I guess the lack of knowledge about hours on the current tubes. It will come in its original box, but the top protection piece (cardboard?) is missing. I will ship it well protected and double boxed. The glass tubes are all wrapped & numbered from where they came from (dont know if that matters). Quite impressed with the range of music this amp could serve. I listen to motown oldies, jazz, melodic death metal, and classical. Didnt do quite so well with the classical. I was utilizing a Mcintosh C41 with a SMSL SU9 and a technics MKII SL1200. In my opinion this amp does very well with digital peripherals. So so with the analog. This Cary preamp is in need of some TLC. Please read everything so youre not disappointed when you receive it as I think full disclosure is the best way to do business. I wanted to test the unit with the metal casing off so I could see if the tubes were good before plugging anything into it. Once I had the housing removed, I decided to take off the faceplate as well because it needed a good cleaning. When I went to take off the knobs, I noticed that the function select knob had an issue. It would turn past the end stops. I figured it just need to be tightened from the back to fix that. At that point, with the housing off & the faceplate removed, I plugged in the unit. Straight away there was a small flame that came from the board directly before the transformer. I can tell you that all 4 of the tubes did light up, but I unplugged the unit almost immediately and that was the end of any testing I did. I cleaned it up, took some pics, and then put the faceplate back on, put the knobs and housing back on, and now Im listing it as is. Please also note that some of the lettering on the faceplate is faded. I know these are on the rarer side and the actual sold prices I could find ranged from $700-1200. Im definitely not an electronics repair tech, so I dont know how much time/money needs to be spent to make it work. Used Cary Audio Rocket 88 Tube Amplifier. Comes with like new PSVANE MKII series quad matched KT88 tubes less than 100 hours on them. Like new less than 100 hrs EL 84 Gold Lion. Like new less than 100 hrs 6922 tubes NOS Amperex Gold pin. Recently replaced 1629 Green Eye Indicator tubes less than 100 hrs. This tube amp has served me well. Quite impressed with the range of music this amp could serve. I listen to motown oldies, jazz, melodic death metal, and classical. Didnt do quite so well with the classical. I was utilizing a Mcintosh C41 with a SMSL SU9 and a technics MKII SL1200. In my opinion this amp does very well with digital peripherals. So so with the analog.
