This receiver was damaged during moving. The 4 speaker wire terminals in the right of the photo are bent, resulting in damage to the mother board. I had an authorized Denon repair shop look at it. Denon doesnt sell replacement mother boards, so the damage cannot be repaired. They verified that the unit is working perfectly as a 5.1 surround sound system -- you just cant use the 4 speaker wire terminals for the 6th and 7th channel. So the bottom line is that the unit can fully support 5 speakers using speaker wires, but not 7 speakers. When I got this news, I bought a new receiver. However, I thought more about it and discovered that there are Lollipop adapters (cost $1 each on Amazon) that allow you to connect speaker wires to RCA connectors. The unit has connection points for 7 speakers using either traditional speaker wire terminals or RCA connectors. You can mix and match these (5 speakers using speaker wire terminals and 2 using RCA connectors). I verified this with Denon customer service. So, for less than $10, I could have continued using this unit rather than buying a new unit, because my speakers have integrated amplifiers. If your speakers dont have that, there are really cheap external amplifiers that you can buy for the two speakers that need RCA connectors. So, if you are looking for a 5.1 surround sound receiver or a traditional stereo receiver, this unit will do whatever you need. If you are willing to use RCA connectors for all or at least 2 of the speaker channels, you should also be able to use it as a 7.2 surround sound system.
