This listing is for a Genuine DeForest Tubular Audion Audiotron Triode Vacuum Tube on DeForest Base. I have never seen a tube mounted this way. The tubular Audiotron is mounted in an insulating plaster-like material. There are two rectangular electrodes imbedded into this plaster, one grounded to the base, the others not connected to anything. I am told that this base was used by an experimenter to hold the tubular Audion. I added a photo of that tube base showing the uncommon shared labeling carrying both DeForest and Marconi markings along with a Fleming patent number 803684. Apparently the added base itself is a rare piece of history. Based on what people told me about my other Audion, presence of a getter pump, indicated that that tube was a a repoduction.This tube has no getter anywhere within or on the glass. It comes to you with the correct tube socket for easy display purposes. The socket itself is one I have never seen before. I have every reason to believe that this is original, made prior to 1920 and the introduction of getter pumps. This tube is in fair cosmetic condition, not too bad for 100+ years. I looked as closely as I could under a microscope at all viewing angles and was not able to find any etchings identifying the manufacturer of this tube. In looking that closely, I observed an interesting detail about this tubes construction. The Copper-looking wire (Dumet - metal alloy with Copper cladding) that holds, and connects to the plate, is not spot welded like all other tubes of this type I have seen. The plate simply has a hole in it, the wires is twisted through the hole and mashed tight. Based on what people told me about my other Audion, presence of a getter pump, indicated that that tube was a a repoduction.This tube has no getter anywhere within or on the glass.It is mounted on a wooden base and the wafer where the plate and grid connections are terminated is Mica. Never let it be said that I will not make corrections when presented with new knowledge from those who are more familiar with an offering than I am. This is not an original McCandless tube, but a much later home-made reproduction. The absolute give-away is the silvery getter deposited on the glass coming from the fixture attached to the plate. This sort of getter did not come into general use until the late 1920s. Original spherical audions did not use getters of any kind. As envisioned by deForest, they were soft tubes with some residual gas that made them operate well as detectors. This listing is for a Reproduction McCandless/DeForest Spherical Audion Triode Vacuum Tube. This tube is a reproduction. The original design used a Tantalum filament, but was physically unstable. McCandless changed the filament to Tungsten, but Tungsten had lower electron yield compared with Tantalum. Hudson proposed that the filament should be made from Tungsten wrapped with Tantalum to get the best of both metals. DeForest produced tubes of that design primarily for military use. McCandles found the two part filament expensive and cumbersome to make so he introduced the Tungsten filament coated with an organic binder which bound Tantalum to the Tungsten filament.This particular tube is an example of this coated filament tube. This tube is in excellent cosmetic condition. A Marks-a-Lot script on the glass stated that the tube had gM=2.5 or 25, its hard to tell. I set up a test socket on my tube tester and did get significant mutual conductance. I cannot give a comparison with the marking because I do not know what grid bias was used for the test. For sale is a Rare pair of Deforest Audion 445 tubes. The tubes were tested on a Triplett 3423 tester for gas, short and Gm. Both tubes passed on the gas and shorts test. A Bad tube will test at 1381Gm and a New tube will test at 2124Gm. Test results are 1800Gm(85%) and 1500Gm(71%). Here we have a preowned Audion Silver Night 300B SE power amplifier. The unit is electrically dead. The amplifier only comes with 1 x 6922 valve, and is missing 1 x 5687 and 2 x 300B valves. This is a DeForest Audion style tube. The base is essentially rubbed clean so I cannot read anything on it. The glass is cool because its rainbow glass with a orange tint to it. Etched on the glass is V.T. 235241 and the words Licensed for Amateur or Experimental Use Only I guess these are also known as Moorehead tubes. Brass base, blown tip. Base is solid, nothing is loose. I cannot test this tube, but I did test for filament continuity and it is good. Best I can do for testing it. Ill ship anywhere in the world. Local pickup is free.
