These speakers sound awesome! And they can get LOUD. With the addition of a Bluetooth adapter for 15-30 bucks they can easily be made Bluetooth wireless.Sorry about he shipping cost, they weigh close to 25 pounds....Review from CNet below...Weve been a little tardy in reviewing Audioengines PC speakers, but were glad we finally got our hands on both the 5 series ($325) reviewed here and the step-down Audioengine 2 series ($199) because they really are quite impressive. The key thing to note about both sets of speakers is that they are bookshelf-style speakers masquerading as PC or multimedia speakers (as these things are apt to be labeled). But unlike classic bookshelf speakers, these Audioengine models are powered (via a standard AC plug); theres no need for a separate receiver or amplifier, so you can use them with any audio source. The larger 5 series is the more industrial-looking (read: less stylish) of the two models and appears to share some heritage with monitor speakers youd find in a recording studio. Its available in either black or white, as are the 2s. Theres also a bamboo version of the 5 series that costs $449.The Audioengine 5 speakers measure 10 inches high by 7 inches wide by 7.9 inches deep. They each have a 5-inch Kevlar woofer and a 20mm silk dome tweeter. Because the left speaker houses the amplifier (50 watts per channel), its heavier than the right speaker. Unlike the 2s, which are ported on the front, the 5s are ported on the rear. Its worth noting that both the 2 and 5 series Audioengine speakers come nicely packaged, with cloth covers over the speakers and cables. The left and right speakers connect to each other with real speaker wire (included) and you also get an input cable that allows you to connect your PC to the 3.5mm aux input on the back of the left speaker. The use of standard cables means that--unlike some speakers with proprietary connections and cables--you can invest in custom-length cables that are as long or as short as youd like.Whats most unique about the Audioengine 5 speakers is the 3.5mm aux input on top of the left speaker that sits next to a USB port. To be clear, the USB port is only for power, not for reading audio files; it also doesnt allow pass-through syncing to PCs. But that combination of USB power-plus-audio input allows you to charge your iPod/iPhone with a USB cable while youre listening to your music. And though the cables make it a bit less appealing to the eye than a standard iPod dock, the combo is far more universal in its compatibility: you can charge n play any USB-powered audio device, including a wide array of non-Apple music phones and media players. It gets even better: the second 3.5mm input on the left speakers backside is located near a full-on AC power jack. Audioengine touts the fact that you can plug an Apple AirPort Express directly into the outlet, turning the speakers into an iTunes streamer (via Apples AirTunes functionality). Of course, that outlet can also power any other audio source--anything from a Sonos or Squeezebox streamer to a CD player.Note that you cant toggle between inputs; both are always active. Thats either going to be a feature (say, the ability to listen to music from an iPod while being able to hear the bleeping and blooping from your PC) or a bug (the constant need to mute one audio source while listening to the other), depending on your point of view. Speaking of controls: no remote is included, and we should point out that the volume control button is on the front of the left speaker. Unlike with the 2s, that volume knob doesnt double as the power switch; theres a separate power toggle on the back of the speaker. However, Audioengine has equipped the 5s with an autosleep power-save mode that kicks in after about 10 minutes when no audio passes through the speakers. That said, some people have complained that the speakers make a sound when the power-save mode kicks in--and it can be fairly loud if you have your volume up high--which you may find annoying. Also of note: though the Audioengines arent technically certified for iPhone, they are magnetically shielded. We didnt experience any GSM interference from the iPhone (those annoying clicks and buzzes that can afflict nonshielded speakers), even when we left it directly on top.Audioengine sells some accessories, including the S8 subwoofer ($350) and a couple of wireless adapters (the W1 and W2) for its speaker line. The subwoofer connects via the red/white RCA stereo outputs on the left speakers backside. It would obviously allow you to get more bass and even richer sound, but the appeal of these speakers is that you can really do without the sub.Its hard to quantify just how much better the Audioengine 5s sound than the Audioengine 2s, but they definitely deliver bigger, richer sound with deep, tight bass, and excellent clarity--and they play very loud. With higher-end PC speakers you just get fuller, smoother sound that has that much more detail, and when you listen to these guys, you start to hear stuff (i.e., individual instruments) in your music that you werent aware was there. They easily best more-expensive iPod speakers out there, including those from Bose and B&W, which retail in some cases for twice as much. When we review PC speakers, we like to throw an eclectic mix of music at them, as well as a couple of action movie and games (usually a first-person shooter or two). We also like to do a little jury testing, and for this review, we pulled in Steve Guttenberg, who reviews home theater speakers for CNET and had previously praised the Audioengine 2s and the Audioengine P4s (unpowered, passive bookshelf speakers) in his Audiophiliac blog. Steve thought the Audioengine 5s sounded great and were clearly superior to the 2s, but he liked the 2s for their smaller footprint, sleeker look, and more affordable price tag.Its true: For some, this model will just seem too bulky to leave sitting on a desk. They truly are bookshelf speakers with--as we said--a more industrial, monitor flair to them. However, the bottom line here is that youre going to be hard-pressed to find a 2.0 system that sounds better, particularly at this price point, and that has the 5s connectivity options. Yes, we could quibble about there not being an integrated iPod dock and remote, but in the end, the extra input and USB port on top of the speaker, combined with the speakers exceptional sound, make the Audioengine 5s worthy of an Editors Choice award.

  • Description

This auction is for a new in the original factory sealed box, Audioengine 512 Wireless Speaker (Black). I purchased this directly from Audioengine. The external box is a little hinky because Audioengine sent it directly with the label on the box. The internal packaging is sealed and in perfect condition. I am the original owner and it has never been opened. If you were to feel compelled to buy this as a present, the recipient would not know the box is funky since the actual item has been protected from the external cardboard packaging. The six pushbuttons on the top control: power on/off, Bluetooth pairing, volume + and -, activation of the auxiliary jack, and play/pause. The power button glows an unobtrusive white when the speaker is on; the Bluetooth button flashes while pairing, then steady blue when pairing is achieved. Voice prompts ease the pairing process, and soft, mewling electronic sounds confirm that’s it been switched on or off. Three tiny white LEDs next to the power button indicate the status of the battery charge. The 512 contains a class-D amplifier specified to output 10W RMS per stereo channel. Audioengine claims that fully charging the battery takes five hours, and that a full charge should provide 12 hours of playing time, depending on volume level. The claimed frequency response is 60Hz-20kHz. The Bluetooth version is 5.0, supporting codec SBC and profiles A2D and AVRCP. Use The 512 was very easy to use and performed like a champ. Bluetooth pairing was easy, and each button did what it was supposed to do. Audioengine claims a range of wireless operation of up to 100’. As usual in my cluttered house, I got about 21’ -- but outdoors, with no obstructions, I was able to achieve 65’ before the 512 began to stutter. This is a larger radius of operation than I’ve gotten with any other Bluetooth speaker. The 512 was easy to carry in one hand, and its rock-solid build quality meant I could move it around with no fear of harming it. The controls’ lighting was subtle and didn’t intrude on my listening. Audioengine’s estimates for the battery were about right: Fully charging the battery took about 4.5 hours, which gave me about ten hours of playing time at high volume. Sound Somewhere, I saw a blurb that called the 512 an “audiophile” speaker. I concur. The 512 is voiced to sound more like a loudspeaker you’d find in a stationary audio system than like a wireless portable: Its bass wasn’t exaggerated, nor were its highs too prominent. The overall sound was tonally even from top to bottom of the 512’s bandwidth: silky highs; a midrange with just the right amount of presence; and bass that was solid, without a hump in the midbass. I was listening to an organ work by J.S. Bach in which an upper-register passage is followed by a bass note. When that note sounded, I exclaimed aloud, “No way!” It was hard to believe that this tiny speaker could reproduce that note at all, but it did. And the 512’s stereo separation made for a listening experience not possible with most portable speakers of this size, most of which are, in any case, mono speakers. The 512 cast aural images to left and right, beyond the boundaries of the speaker itself, to produce a wider soundstage than any mono speaker or most portable stereo speakers can provide. In sum Has the 512 achieved the goals specified by Audioengine founder Brady Bargenquast in the first paragraph of this review? I believe it has. In fact, the Audioengine 512 is a standout portable Bluetooth speaker, and an amazing little speaker at an honest price. Its reproduction of stereo soundstages was superb -- it gave the impression of a miniature two-channel audio system that you could enjoy outdoors. Some will no doubt prefer a portable outdoor speaker that has been voiced as such -- that is, one with a frequency-response bump here and there -- but I suspect that most readers of this site will prefer the more natural sound of the Audioengine 512. It isn’t just a contender -- it’s a winner. Shipping will be $14.00. No international bidders, please.

Heavy internal sound-damping material is used to reduce unwanted sound reflections inside the cabinet. All cabinet edges are rounded which look great and reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The A5+ cabinet contains tuned, rear-port slots. FURNITURE GRADE FINISHES The A5+ cabinets are available in several handsome finishes, including bamboo veneers as well as satin black and high-gloss white paint, offering a wide choice for complementing room furnishings. CUSTOM COMPONENTS Audioengine designs and manufactures our own tweeters, woofers, and other critical components. In other words, these are not ?box built? speakers with off-the-shelf parts but custom-designed to our specifications. What we do not fabricate directly in our factory we have made to our designs (parts such as transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses, for example). The cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are all painstakingly tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires much less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. BASED ON STUDIO MONITOR DESIGNS Studio monitor speakers are used by producers and engineers in recording and production studios. They are designed with a theoretical flat frequency response which allows the engineer to create a final mix in such a way that the recorded music will sound good on most other speakers. Although Audioengine speakers are not designed to be up-close ?nearfield? studio monitors, we do carry over much of the same higher-end technology, components, and design philosophy for all Audioengine speaker systems. EFFICIENT INTEGRATED DESIGN The speaker cabinets, drivers, innovative bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all critically tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. We build all this goodness into the left speaker cabinet to make it super-easy to connect your smartphone, tablet, computer, TV, network player or any other audio product. USB POWER The Audioengine A5+ includes a 5V, 500mA USB power supply for charging portable devices, while listening to your music. The USB connector allows you to charge and power your Smartphone, Tablet, Audioengine wireless adapters or any other USB powered product. USB is for power only, not USB audio or data transfer. AMPLIFIER DESIGN The amplifiers in powered Audioengine speakers are located in the left speaker and are a conservatively-rated class A/B analog monoblock design. This is a more traditional speaker/amplifier marriage which provides excellent quality audio and greater flexibility. All circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection. DRIVER DESIGNS Audioengine uses audiophile-quality, ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response. The woofers are aramid fiber woven glass composite with rubber surrounds. Aramid fiber is obviously very strong, which means that the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The speaker materials and construction are robust enough to stand up to some serious thrashing, so speaker grills are not needed and they will sound and look great after many years of use. POWER TRANSFORMERS Power transformers are a large contributor to the overall audio performance, especially in the low end. Again, no off-the-shelf parts. Audioengine uses gapless core toroidal transformers which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, directly translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard, lower-cost transformers and also generate less heat. SHIELDING Both drivers are directly video shielded and allow the user to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard-drive digital music players.

Connect your iDevice, computer, TV, or any other audio component for great stereo sound in any room. Company & Product Overview In less than 10 years time, Audioengine has become one of the most respected manufacturers of computer audio-related products. The founders came from both the high-tech and music worlds (Apple and Harmon/Kardon, and Gibson Guitars and Alesis, respectively). This combination has proven stellar for creating innovative products that sound like they cost significantly more than their actual price tag. Today we are reviewing their best-selling A5+ powered speaker system. We also used their D1 USB DAC/Headphone Amp for enhanced performance. The A5+ is a pair of self-powered speakers designed for desktop use with your computer or a standard audio system.Design & Build Quality To put things in perspective, the A5+ is $399 a pair and the D1 is $169. The D1 is even capable of 24/192 for high-resolution music files, meaning this compact system has everything you need in a system for under $600. The Audioengine A5+ comes in three beautiful finishes — black, white, and bamboo. The A5+ speakers are fairly small at around 11” high, 7” wide, and about 9” deep; and fit pretty well on a desktop. They have two audio inputs (mini and RCA), a variable out for a subwoofer, a USB jack on one speaker to supply power, and a set of speaker connections to wire up the other speaker. They are also mirror imaged with the tweeter having a left and right dispersion-tuned mount. The tweeter is a silk dome with a 5” Kevlar woofer. Audioengine makes the drivers themselves rather than buying something off the shelf, which ensures better overall sound. The cabinets are finely made from MDF and are quite heavy for their small size. The amp is an Audioengine proprietary design and uses a toroidal transformer, which is astounding considering their price. One thing that we love about powered speakers is that the designer can perfectly fine-tune the amp to the speaker drivers since they know it will uniquely connect to these speakers alone. This affords the designer much more leeway to perfectly align the amp with a single speaker system. Audioengine goes a step further by mounting the amp on a special shock-mounted system to reduce vibrations when. If you want to get creative, there are many ways to enjoy the A5+ speakers. Audioengine makes high-quality Bluetooth adaptors so you can stream directly from your device to the speakers.Performance While we could have connected the A5+ speakers to the analog out of our desktop PC, we decided to use the D1 USB DAC to further test Audioengines products. This is a simple DAC with both analog outs and a mini headphone jack. We connected a USB from the computer to the D1 and ran an analog cable from the D1 to the RCA audio input on the speaker. Once everything was connected, we opened Tidal and proceeded to play some of our favorite tunes. To be honest, we werent initially impressed. But we soon realized the type of audio that was bothering our ears is what we typically experience with a brand new speaker and amp that hasnt had time to break in. So we decided to give them a chance and put Tidal on a long loop to play alone for about 24 hours. After 24 hours of burn-in, we gladly discovered this is both the least expensive system weve ever had on our desks for computer audio and by far the best sounding. The biggest difference between the A5+ speakers and everything weve previously tested is the fact that they are a real set of speakers. The sound is well-balanced without the perceived bass bump that I hear in a lot of smaller desktop speakers. Instead of the typical “one-note bass,” these guys have tuneful bass. The highs are silky smooth (no pun intended, considering the silk dome tweeter) and they have incredible stereo imaging. One of the A5+s most distinguishing features is their sense of rhythm and pacing. Many speaker systems give you great tonal quality but lose that sense of rhythm youd typically receive from a live performance. Weve discovered this is easier to accomplish with a powered speaker since its designed as a system. When this is done properly, such as Audioengines A5+, you cant help but keep listening. While most desktop systems shut down if you try to drive them hard, the A5+ plays incredibly loud yet holds everything together, even when pushing them to their max: a truly impressive feat for the money.Overall Recommendation Ultimately, we feel the Audioengine A5+ is probably one of the very best values in audio. They work incredibly well as a computer music system or a great starter audio system. Were even seeing them purchased alongside an entry-level turntable and phono stage to create a complete vinyl playback system for under $1000 (well worth twice their price!). Audioengines goal is “to provide a high-end listening experience at affordable prices with easy to use, high-quality products.” These little speakers achieve just that. Whether youre an audio enthusiast seeking a desktop solution, or youre just starting to get into higher performance listening, the Audioengine A5+ powered speakers are a great solution.
