Audio Research Ref 5 SE Tube Pre-amp! an absolutely incredible sounding preamp! has been completely checked out and is working great, sounding great. comes with the newer metal remote. has a new 6550we regulator tube. the 6H30s have about 300 hours on them but the hour meter had been reset for some reason. This IS the SE version. it has the upgraded Shunyata wire, coupling caps, and the extra Power supply Cap bank. just missing the SE faceplate. This amp had been sent into a less than qualified repair shop that was local to the previous owner. it sat on a shelf for almost a year. and along the way the front face plate was quote...lost (read stolen) why the face plate was even removed is a mystery. after about a year and a half the owner got tired of waiting and just went and got it and sent it to me to look at. it just needed the 6550 replaced and that was all that was wrong with it (along with the now missing face plate). after some negotiation i ended up with it. I managed to locate this scratched and banged up face plate for it but i am continuing to look for a replacement. as such I am open to offers for it as is. unless i can locate the correct face plate or at least one in better shape. Functionally the preamp is tip top. and besides the face plate the rest of it looks great. Take advantage and get yourself a great deal! **** Update Update: I have located a faceplate but the seller is away until the 16th. I intend to purchase it on his return.

It presents detail but given adequate warm-up time and suitable ancillaries, the detail is never etched or clinical sounding. It has a large enveloping soundstage, particularly front to back, with good image placement and plenty of air and space around elements in the soundscape. It provides a good, solid bass foundation, better than most tube amps that I’ve heard to date. It is remarkably transparent. Speakers are able to disappear unimpeded and the window into the music is clear, without any discernible opacity. It has dynamic drive and punch and is great with rock music, but if the recording is bad, it isn’t going to gloss over the fact.
