Polk Audio’s three-piece Reference Monitor speaker system, the RM-3000, consists of two small satellite speakers and a subwoofer module. Although this general configuration is currently enjoying increased popularity, Polk’s version differs from the others in many of its design details.Each of the satellite speakers is a miniature two-way system with a 3-1/2-inch “woofer” operating above 200 Hz and crossing over at approximately 4,000 Hz to a 3/4-inch dome tweeter. The tweeter is protected against burnout by an internal auto reset protection device that cuts off its signal until the power has been reduced to a safe level. The tweeter is stepped back about 1-1/4 inches from the plane of the woofer to provide proper time alignment of the outputs of the two drivers.The satellite enclosure is made of a high-density, non-resonant polymer aggregate similar to the material used for high-quality kitchen countertops. The smooth, glassy exterior is resistant to physical damage, and each of the satellites— which measure only 6-3/4 inches high, 4-1/4 inches wide, and 5 inches deep, including the molded plastic grilles—weighs a surprisingly heavy 4-1/2 pounds. The crossovers contain second-order low-pass and high-pass sections designed to complement the time alignment of the drivers. In addition to its crossover network, each satellite also contains a 200-hz high-pass filter that protects it from being damaged by high-level low-frequency signals.The subwoofer contains two 6-1/2-inch cone drivers, each driven by one stereo channel. For each channel, the appropriate satellite, the subwoofer, and the amplifier are simply wired in parallel. The subwoofer enclosure, which measures 20-1/4 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 10 inches high, is supported 2 inches above the floor on four rubber feet. Its interior is divided into two separate sections o? different volumes, with the drivers mounted on the dividing partition. The rear surfaces of the two driver cones face the sealed volume, which provides the necessary stiffness for their proper operation. In the other section, the pressure generated by the drivers is coupled to a 10-inch passive radiator mounted on the bottom of the cabinet, facing the floor. According to Polk, the passive-radiator coupling reproduces the low frequencies more efficiently than a simple port radiator, while the mass and size of the passive cone (called the “sub-bass” radiator) attenuate the higher frequencies, providing an 18-dB-per-octave rolloff matching the low-frequency rolloff of the satellites. Since each driver is connected to one of the stereo channels, the two channels are acoustically blended throughout the subwoofer’s operating frequency range (which contains virtually no directional information). Although the subwoofer’s response rolls off naturally above 170 Hz, the unit also contains a first-order low-pass filter to avoid wasting amplifier power above its operating range.

Im not a reviewer and so without plagiarizing one, there is no way for me to describe these masterpieces of audio, art and science.They are simply remarkable in every way. This is the 46 pair made (serial # 0091/0092 in 2004) and were at the time, Wilsons best claim to immortality ~ The improvements over the X1 were quite extraordinary and Wilson would go on to refine every incarnation of the Alexandrias until they simply ran out of ways to improve it and went towards the current reference speaker they make today. Nothing really came close to reproducing sound in a room the way the Alexandrias did and with the exception of the latest incarnations, I cant imagine any other speaker, in this price range keeping up with their sheer impact and reality. Properly set-up (very critical) the Alexandrias simply disappear, which is a remarkable feat for something so large, but that is, after all, the whole idea. What the listener is left with is nothing but the music. The depth, soundstage and total command of the space is what the Alexandrias were designed for and like every pair of Alexandrias, this pair represents the best that Dave Wilson and his team could build at the time. At the time, I owned the 8th pair (serial # 015/016) made of the iconic Bowers & Wilkins NautilusThe original snails that Dickey and his team had spent over 5 years in R&D and considered one of the most neutral loudspeakers ever conceived. I had never experienced anything like the Nautilus (another one of my definitive audio moments!) The Alexandrias were so different in every way...there was no real limit to what Dave Wilson was prepared to spend on R&D on this speaker. He wanted the very best reproducer that he could build... regardless of cost and the only other speaker than comes to mind that approaches what might have been spent on R&D on the Alexandrias is the iconic Bowers & Wilkins original Nautilus This pair of X2s were purchased new at Sound Components and set up by Mark Goldman in 2004. It has been a privilege to spend time with them over the years and Ive had an open invitation to listen to them anytime I want to hear them. I have the room (Listening Room #1 jimgraydesigns.com) for them, but between the Nautilus 802D4, the Klipsch LaScala and the brand new Bowers & Wilkins 805D4 Signature, theres just no room for them right now. They are far and away the best speaker Ive ever owned. I have thought about moving the LaScalas to Listening Room #2, which would open up the space for the Alexandrias... but Im not there yet.I have measured the room and found the Zone of NeutralityThey will certainly work... I believe the Alexandrias, in all their incarnations, will go down as one of the finest speakers ever conceived. To hear them in person is a pretty sublime experience...there really are no words. The Alexandrias are back in their original crates and ready to ship... I would estimate the cost to ship and insure them will probably be between $2,500 ~ $3,000, depending on how far they have to travel and whether they ship to a residence or business. Back to this pairs history for a moment... I can tell you that they have mostly played classical music... Mostly vinyl and only by one owner and two users (me, being one) they are in like new condition and theres not much else I can add. Magnificent sounding pair of Audio Research Balanced Tube Mono blocks with over 200 glorious tube watts of power enough to drive almost any reference loudspeaker. This pair uses 8 KT120 tubes per channel and, unlike the recent power amplifiers from ARC that use solid state power regulators, uses a tube regulated power supply with a 6550 tube. I have run many loudspeakers with these mono blocks and compared them to many other state of the art amplifiers. I have not found anything that comes close to the majestic sound of these behemoths. They are simply unparalleled in my listening experience with both electrostatic and dynamic speakers. This pair is offered with a complete set of two unused brand new tube sets (32 KT 120 power tubes) besides the 16 KT 120 tubes already in the amplifiers. That’s roughly 48 KT 120 tubes that at current market prices for these tubes is worth several thousand dollars. You will not need new tubes for a long while with these amplifiers. Some points to keep in mind in deciding whether to buy these amplifiers: 1. These are large fan-cooled tube amplifiers that are fully balanced. You’ll need the place them in a room with sufficient ventilation as they run pretty warm. 2. I used these with ARC Reference tube preamplifiers. You can use them with other balanced preamplifiers or DACs that have a volume control. 3. The Bluebook value as attached is around $5000, which does not include the two spare new tube sets I am including with mine. Do your research and see what 32 KT 120 tubes cost (mine are factory matched octets, which are being sold on eBay for $1000 per octet). 4. Check the weight and size of these amplifiers.
