Sculptural art in cabinet styling, and state-of-the-art acoustic technology, are combined to produce speakers with extraordinary visual effect and a new, higher level of musical accuracy. It is clear that loudspeaker cabinets, which occupy prominent positions in living spaces, should be as pleasing to the eye as we can make them. But loudspeakers are more than furniture, and technical performance is of overriding importance. HiFi Classic Review:Some years ago, Roy Allison conducted a study that indicated that the room in which a speaker is placed, and the physical relationship of the speaker and the room, can produce a significant change in the actual acoustic low-frequency power response of the system. This is in addition to the normal standing-wave and room-resonance phenomena that usually cause variations in the low-frequency sound-pressure level throughout a room. The undesired interaction between room and speaker can be minimized by designing the speaker to operate together with the room as a system. From the beginning, therefore, Allison loudspeaker systems have featured what Allison Acoustics calls “Room-Matched” design. The low-frequency power output of a speaker can be optimized for mounting against one, two, or three room-boundary surfaces (walls, floor, or ceiling). All Allison speakers have been designed to take advantage of this fact, although the various models differ considerably in their physical configuration and in their recommended placement. The new Allison:Seven is a relatively low-cost, floor-standing, two-way speaker designed to be placed against a wall but at least 2 feet from a corner. Because of their broad dispersion, a pair of Allison:Seven speakers need not be placed against the same wall and will operate effectively when facing at right angles to each other. The oak-veneer cabinet is 27-1/2 inches high and 9-5/8 inches square, and each speaker weighs 22 pounds. The 8-inch woofer of the Allison:Seven faces upward, and in the recommended placement its edge is within an inch of the wall. (This is necessary to avoid the partial cancellation of mid-bass output that occurs whenever a woofer is located a foot or so from a wall.) The woofer operates in a sealed (acoustic-suspension) enclosure with a volume of 1,775 cubic inches, and it resonates at 52 Hz. It crosses over to the tweeter at 2,000 Hz, with 6-dB-per-octave slopes. The speaker has no level or balance controls. The forward-facing tweeter is located near the top of the front surface of the cabinet. Its voice coil is cooled and damped by Ferrofluid, and the tweeter has the patented Allison convex diaphragm, which gives excellent dispersion by virtue of being designed to simulate a pulsating hemisphere. The diaphragm is not hemispherical in shape, however. It resembles a rounded cone reminiscent of a giant spherical phono stylus. The low-frequency response of the Allison:Seven is specified as — 3 dB at 41 Hz and —6 dB at 34.5 Hz. The system impedance is rated at 4 ohms, and its sensitivity is specified as 87 dB at 1 meter for a 1-watt input. The Allison:Seven is sold in pairs, and the price is $450 per pair. Comment...Over the years, we have tested most of the Allison speakers as they have appeared, and we have found them, despite their wide differences in size and price, to be uniformly excellent and generally very similar in their sound properties. The Allison:Seven is in that tradition. In our listening room we were unable to place the speakers directly against the wall behind them because of baseboard heating fins and other obstacles. Much of the time, the speakers were about one foot from the wall. If this had any adverse effect on their performance, we were unaware of it. The sound was smooth, balanced, and without any apparent emphasis or de-emphasis of any part of the audio spectrum. The dispersion of the speakers was excellent, and there was no sense of spatial separation between the sounds from the woofer and tweeter. The Allison:Seven is a compact speaker, and its walnut finish is attractive. When given the opportunity, the system delivers an impressive level of clean, deep bass that seems almost inconsistent with its dimensions and light appearance. Considering that we did not have the speakers placed optimally for flat bass output, their performance is all the more impressive. Priced competitively with a number of good but conventional “bookshelf’ speakers, the Allison:Seven offers definite advantages over many of them in both audible and visible terms. It is an excellent value, and the only possible disadvantage we can see for it is the requirement of a closely backing wall for theoretically optimum results. Allison claims, however, that no matter where the speaker is placed, its bass response will always be at least as good as a conventional speaker in the same location, and this seems to have been confirmed in our tests. Smooth, well-balanced sound, compact, and relatively inexpensive—a nice combination.

It was used to divide a 4” mid/bass woofer from a 1” dome tweeter at 2.5kHz and has top quality materials in its construction. This crossover is from the first version MS200; later MS-200 used a smaller tweeter and cost-cutting spring-tab +/- terminals.So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this outstanding dividing network is correct for your needs. This Allison crossover is in clean, excellent condition. The black plastic chassis has no cracks, chips, or scratches. Very rare Allison acoustics AL105 P Loudspeakers exceptional condition, beautiful Oak colour. These are a second pair of matched American Allison AL 105 P refurbished ( sequential numbers ) loudspeakers that I am selling. Please feel free to review great feedback from first pair sold last year. They play exceptional well with all tweeters and woofers working perfectly. Beautiful sounding speakers with very little use from the legendary Allison Acoustics factory in USA. Probably the best around on the market at this time. As part of a recent service /refurbishment ( Summer 2022 ) the following work was carried out to bring the speakers up to the highest Allison standards, all good to go. Driver speakers suspension foam seals renewedNew spiders installed and voice coil magnet seats cleaned and reset to maintain the high standards set by Allison acoustics.New tweeter grills.New carbon steel screws fitted throughout. Just completed 100 hours of running in time, the longer I play them the better they sound. This is needed after re-foaming drivers to optimise sound performance. So perfect opportunity to buy as a investment before prices continue to increase, as they have done over last 10 years. Will be sent by UPS 24 hour fully insured delivery in a secure box with bubble wrap and foam. But before I tell you about Allison I need to explain a little about bass cancellation. A room can be pretty effectively treated for mid and high frequencies because their shorter wavelengths rarely cause unsolvable phase problems but the really big problems are below 500Hz where the bass is. Bass is omnidirectional; it travels in all directions. Not only towards the listener, but also towards rear and side-walls. When this bass bounces off the walls and is reflected back towards the listener, it has travelled a longer distance than the directly radiated bass. In the best case (when the speaker is so close to the wall that the reflected wave is still more or less in step with the original sound) this muffles the sound, destroys timing, makes bass pitch less clear or makes the bass overall just a bit woolly. More often (when the distance to the walls is great enough to delay the reflected sound so much that it is effectively arriving half a wavelength later) it causes cancellation at certain frequencies, which more often than not results in large dips in the mid bass. You can probably imagine what happens if this problem is doubled if both rear and side-walls cause the same problem. At the same time there is the real possibility that one wall causes cancelling while the other wall does the opposite, which is to amplify the bass at certain other frequencies. The end result is a long shot from the wishful thinking that is the flat frequency curve. The theoretically best place for a bass speaker is smack in the corner. This way, all bass, both direct and reflected, is traveling the same distance and is always in phase. This is why we place subwoofers in corners. The bass is amplified acoustically and couples best with the room. Of course you can’t just shove any speaker in the corners of your room because the acoustical amplification will not only keep the bass in phase; it will also hugely colour the sound higher up the frequency spectrum. It works with subwoofers because they are filtered to cut off all frequencies above, say, 100Hz. This is so low that it is mostly below the room resonance and the result will be powerful full bass. Normal speakers also have to portray the midrange and high frequencies. These two are hugely compromised when a speaker is placed near a wall.In come the Allison speakers. They have been designed from the get-go to be placed in corners. Their frequency curve has been tailored just so that they sound neutral when they are placed in the corners of a room. This is not an entirely new idea but these days, in the current loudspeaker assortment, it is unique. Have you ever noticed that the amount of bass differs enormously depending on where you stand in the room? The cool thing about the Allison speakers is that the bass sounds perfect just about anywhere in the room. Allison Acoustics Allison Four Bookshelf Speaker (Single) Woodgrain Cabinet Speaker is in good condition considering it’s age, and sounds great when hooked up to my own receiver and tape deck. All settings governed by the control switch along the back are functional, and allow for you to change the depth and quality of sound being produced by the speaker. On the outside, this speaker appears to be in sound shape, but upon further examination, the woofer on the top face of the cabinet appears to have been partially blown. I determined this by tapping lightly with my finger around the circular cone, and heard one particular point where the pitch sounded off. My guess is that there is a damaged coil underneath the paper, but I am not a professional with speakers whatsoever. Regardless though, I am unable to hear any distortion in sound quality when listening to music through it. Aside from the issues with the woofer mentioned on top, there is a small point of damage seen along one of the metal grates on the side of speaker. One of the mesh covers appears to have a tear in the metal in the shape of an L, that blends in very seamlessly when the grate is attached to the cabinet. The tweeters underneath both grates appear to be in excellent condition as well. Other than what has been detailed thus far, the speaker is in great shape cosmetically, with only a few scratches focused sporadically around the top and bottom face of the wood cabinetry.
