Yamaha M-80 Amplifier - Fully Restored For sale is the well regarded M-80 amplifier from the 1980s and well built in Japan. The amplifier has been fully refurbished. The changes/upgrades are listed below. The M-80 has a loyal following because of its high power and trademark Yamaha sound. This amp will drive 99% of the speakers on the market today to reference volume levels. SEE PHOTOS for imperfections that could not be remedied. THIS AMPLIFIER HAS BEEN FULLY TESTED FOR OVER 3 MONTHS WITH NO PROBLEMS. From a period review: The M-80 is an extremely powerful amplifier, differing from most (especially those of Japanese origin) in having ratings for driving loads as low as 2 ohms. Among its special features is a switchable “Auto Class A Power” circuit that is supposed to operate the output transistors in Class A (for minimum distortion) at low power levels and make an imperceptible transition to Class AB as more power is required. Both the M-80 and the C-80 employ what Yamaha calls “Zero Distortion Rule” circuits, apparently a combination of feedback and feedforward techniques that, in theory, can reduce distortion to zero. The M-80 power amplifier, as its weight of over 50 pounds implies, is not an amplifier to be taken lightly. Its top became very hot (above the internal heat sinks) during the one-hour preconditioning and the following high-power tests, but it was no more than moderately warm in normal use. The M-80’s power performance into 8-ohm loads was quite impressive, but the really special qualities of the amplifier became more apparent when we drove lower impedance loads. For example, its dynamic headroom into 4 ohms was no less than 3.78 dB, with short-term power getting up to 787 watts per channel. Finally, we came to the 2-ohm measurement, the nemesis of so many amplifiers. It wasn’t even practical to drive both channels simultaneously into 2-ohm loads, since this overloaded our 15-ampere test-bench power system! Driving one channel, the clipping power was 612 watts, and the dynamic power was a staggering 1045 watts. The amplifier was stable when driving reactive simulated speaker loads and the standard IHF reactive load. Given Yamaha’s emphasis on the low-distortion circuitry of the M-80, we should not have been too surprised at the results of our distortion measurements. They were indeed difficult and time-consuming to make, since the 1,000-Hz THD of this amplifier (driving 8-ohm loads) was less than 0.0025 percent up to the clipping point, and typically well under 0.001 percent. Even with 4-ohm loads the distortion never exceeded 0.01 percent, and with 2-ohm loads it rose from less than 0.001 percent at a few watts to 0.02 percent at 300 watts and 0.15 percent at 400 watts. The replaced parts are also pictured. This amplifier will provide another 40 years of sound performance. The following work has been performed on this unit: Cosmetic: Premium binding posts installed (Speaker C has been disabled) Faceplate and knobs detailed Cleaned inside and out Corrosive bonding glue removed Top and bottom covers have been sandblasted and powder coated. Overall condition is average Service: Electrolytic capacitors completely replaced with Nichicon capacitors Filter capacitors tested and confirmed to be within specifications Upgraded with WIMA film capacitors where possible New speaker relays installed Circuit boards cleaned Wires wrapped and redirected Transformers sealed where foam reacted with top plates Adjustment trimmers replaced with Bourns units Damaged resistors replaced with Vishay military grade units Cold solder joints touched up Idle adjusted Fully tested HIGH OUTUT TESTING FOR 3 MONTHS Packaging will be done to excess. Selling this as-is/parts-repair, no returns. It has worked intermittently. One time I turn it on it works, next time I turn it on nothing happens. Not sure what’s up with it, but it will need some fixin’. All the lights seem to be good, cosmetically it looks great, very clean. Very nice unit. For sale is a great condition Yamaha M-80. There are scratches here and there due to its age and vintage item. The power rating is 250 watts @ 8ohms and everything is functional except for the SPEAKER C and SPEAKER A do not work. Only the pair of SPEAKER B does work perfectly. If you look at the back view picture of the M-80, the RED color square box is the SPEAKER B set and that is the set you want to use for listening to 2 channel stereo (Left and Right). All speaker connections on the back were custom installed so I can use banana plugs. And the 3 RED lights at the bottom of the red meter do not work (please see the 3rd picture with the 3 red square shapes). The red meter do work normally. Return: 14 day return.
