At this level its all about simple, effective engineering: something Rega understands. The RP1 is about as simple as record players get. It has a plain rectangular plinth with three rubber feet. As with any turntable, careful positioning is a must for the best results: just keep it away from the speakers and make sure the supporting surface is rigid and all will be fine. The plinth carries a well-made main bearing and the RB 101 arm – a simplified version of Regas highly regarded RB300 – plus a motor with a stepped pulley. This allows a manual speed change where the drive belt is moved by hand between the pulley steps. A perfectly likeable Ortofon OMB5 cartridge completes the hardware. Amazing sound for the money Set-up is a breeze. The cartridge is pre-fitted and the ideal counterweight position is already marked on the arm. Just set the bias – just under 2 worked well – and place the Phenolic resin (posh plastic, in other words) platter in place, and off you go. It doesnt take long to see that the RP1 is a terrific performer for the money. It sounds surefooted and confident whether playing a heavily used copy of Holsts The Planets or a factory fresh pressing of The XXs Mercury-prize winning debut. In each case the Rega digs up plenty of information. The decks dynamics are strong and theres a decent dose of rhythmic drive. Its clear the Ortofon cartridge limits transparency, but its still balanced enough not to spoil things. Pro-ject has rightly dominated the budget turntable market for the last decade or so with various versions of its Debut and Genie decks. The Rega RP1 is good enough to change all that. Rega RP10 in excellent condition. The Apheta 3 cartridge has less than 100hrs on it as well as the table. It will be carefully packed and insured prior to shipping. Fantastic Rega RP10 Turntable c/w original PSU and Apheta 2 Moving Coil Cartridge, new belts fitted, fully tested and working perfectly. The cartridge has had a maximum of 100 hours use and the stylus tip is in excellent shape - no sibilance, no inner groove distortion. The RB2000 tonearm and heavyweight acrylic platter bearings are perfect and both speeds run completely true. The outer plinth that the lid attaches to is removable and it seems to be the case that most owners set the deck up utilising just the inner plinth sat on its three conical feet. Please note that the 3 rubber o rings that sit inside the outer plinth have perished but can be sourced through a Rega dealer should you want to replace (please see photos). Cosmetically the deck is in great shape overall with a few light scuffs and scratches on the lid and similar on the top of the psu - the tonearm and platter are perfect with no dints or chips. The RP10 is built to a very high standard, everything feels very solid and this is also matched by its sonic performance - it is musical, engaging, articulate and quick with great dynamics, it stays true to the original recorded material and is endlessly listenable, a very special deck indeed.
