Shigaraki city in Japan has the distinction of being one of the oldest pottery centers in Japan. Wood-fired stoneware from Shigaraki has been in production from circa 1300 AD to the present day! To date, 47 ancient kiln sites have been discovered in Shigaraki. One of the distinctive aspects of traditional Shigaraki stoneware pottery is being fired in wood-fueled Anagama kilns.
