Description
It is our pleasure to offer this Kenwood R-2000 shortwave radio receiver for your consideration. This receiver was manufactured in Japan from 1983-1992 and originally sold as a top performing, but modestly priced unit. As is typical of these early Japanese receivers, the unit is built of sturdy parts, using a heavy gauge metal cabinet and a carry handle for toting it into remote locations. It is capable of receiving from 150 KHz to 30 MHz uninterrupted tuning using a range of listening modes. This Kenwood R-2000 receiver came to us with some marks on the covers from previous ownership. The covers could be repainted if the buyer found this to be objectionable. The front panel shows minor marking and this is what you view when operating the receiver. We have taken HD pictures to enable up close viewing so that you can easily see the receiver as if it was sitting on the table in front of you. Electrically, everything on this R-2000 works fine but we noticed that the display reads off (high) by about 300 Hz. When listening to signals on mediumwave and shortwave using the AM mode, you will not even realize the slight discrepancy. When you tune using sideband on the amateur frequencies, youll likely notice that someone transmitting on say 3975.0 KHz will read at 3973.3 KHz on the display. This receivers functions and features have been fully tested to verify operation and proper sensitivity and we found no issues or shortcomings. Sensitivity was Kenwood perfect. If you are an experienced user, you will have two bandwidths and 3 tuning speeds. For beginning shortwave listeners, the receiver is easy to operate and offers nice sensitivity with a proper antenna. Our father who passed away six years ago at 92 years old was a ham radio operator and used the call sign WA3YFN. Ever since a young age, we would be near his radio room and overhear him give his call letters...Whiskey, Alpha, Three....Yankee, Foxtrot, November. He had used Kenwood transceivers for over 25 years and loved the dependability that the Kenwood name offers. In addition, Kenwood products have some nice user features that enhance the capabilities of the equipment and give the listener more control over reception of those elusive signals. This R-2000 is no exception and we have enjoyed playing with its variety of controls the when testing the receiver. Let us review some of these features for you. With the R-2000, you have: 3 tuning speeds, a band selector and a tuning knob. Depending on where you are in the range of frequencies and where you want to go, you use a combination of these to get you quickly to the band or to the specific frequency. memory buttons for favorite stations the ability to scan memories for quick location of broadcasts timers for recording programs when removed from your listening station 2 clocks for having both local and universal time at your fingertips tone control for listener preference in sound a noise blanker for certain types of man-made interference narrow / wide choice of bandwidths to allow the user to select the best sound and intelligibility without side channel interference lower and upper sideband or CW to hear amateur radio, marine, and air traffic & weather. The R-2000 does a great job at making sideband signals intelligible and this receiver can provide hours upon hours with a variety of listening enjoyment dimmer switch for the display for night time listening tilt bail underneath to lift the Kenwood up off of the surface for easier accessibility, if needed. operates on 100 / 120 / 220 / 240 VAC The sound coming from the internal speaker is above average for communications receivers. Also above average are many of the evaluations from across various sites on the internet. One of our favorite places to visit for information is eHam as it offers information from actual users over a portion of time, not professionals that may test it for a few days in a shop or lab. The R-2000 has 29 reviews here and it ranks a 4.2 out of 5: https://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/467 (please copy and paste this link into your internet browser) What we like about the R-2000 receiver is that it offers excellent performance, is a well constructed unit that holds up well over time, and is not overly complex for the beginning to intermediate hobbyist. It may not offer all the advanced controls found on the much higher priced receivers, but it offers enough features for you to be able to enjoy tuning a variety of signals in most listening conditions. You will be required to attach an external antenna to this communications receiver for best performance, and after attaching a decent antenna, will be rewarded with a variety of broadcasts streaming in from all over the world. If you are accustomed to watching TV for your entertainment, then the R-2000 and other shortwave receivers will not likely interest you. But if you like to know what is going on elsewhere and find the standard fare of TV entertainment to be unfulfilling, then you would enjoy hearing a variety of shortwave broadcasts for a nice change. It is common to hear news from around the world in English and other programming such as jazz shows, cooking programs, history, stamp collecting, drama, and sports, and other such shortwave broadcasts that can be most entertaining and enlightening. To summarize, this Kenwood receiver works well across the entire tuning range and performs beautifully. Please email if you have any questions! For those of you that like would like a history of Kenwood, here is a brief one for you to read: Kenwood was originally begun in Japan as the Kasuga Musen Denki Shokai Limited Company and founded in 1946....just 1 year after the end of WW2. In 1952, its first communications grade receiver was produced using 6 tubes and called the 6R-4. In 1955, the company broadened its line and now expanded into mass production of audio, communications, and test equipment selling much of it under the brand and company name of Trio. Then in 1960, the Trio Company changed its name to Trio Limited. In addition to a variety of equipment under its own name, it manufactured private label pieces for the large retail chain, Lafayette and other firms. In 1963, the overseas brand name of Kenwood was established for hi-fi equipment in Los Angeles. In 1975, Trio-Kenwood Communications, Inc. was established in Gardena, CA to market amateur radio equipment in the USA. In 1986 the name was shortened to Kenwood Corporation. Over the years, Kenwood has produced some of the most durable, sensitive, and user friendly equipment for the amateur radio and shortwave listening markets.
