One of the things I loved about this preamp is that it uses relays for volume control, which means the center image was perfectly centered, regardless of the volume as regular volume controls are generally not that accurate, the resistor volume on this is perfectly balanced. You can hear the click of the relays when you turn the volume up or down. It also has balanced control from the Remote Control which is amazing and rare in a pre-amplifier! From Stereophile The Conrad-Johnson Premier 17LS is a superb preamplifier, and one of the very best I have ever used. It did a beautiful job of reproducing the tonal richness and subtleties of live music. Its resolution of detail was excellent, and it re-created performers and their surrounding ambient environments with a three-dimensional, nearly holographic solidity. It might have been slightly soft at the frequency extremes and a bit sweeter than reality, and though its dynamics were precise and clean, they were perhaps a bit less powerful than those of some other units. But the reality was that, once the lights went down and the music came up, everything — strengths, weaknesses, audiophile criteria, reviewer nitpicking, even my long-held paradigms—it all vanished, leaving only the music. Super clean cosmetically, plus on the test bench were it performed very well for its price.Note that this is the L Line Level version of the PF2, which does *not* have a phono preamp section. The rear panel shows AUX/PHONO, but on the PF2 L this is only an AUX style standard line-level input.
